Getaway Often

October 20, 2020

During these unusual times, camping is the safest, social distancing vacation. My go-to glamping outpost is Getaway House DC in Shenandoah, VA. I camped here a few times last year, but had to stop traveling due to 2020 restrictions (and paranoia). A few months ago, I decided to get out of the city and go back to getaway-glamping. I'm obsessed all over again!

The camping outpost in Shenandoah is a 20 acre plot of land with small cabins scattered about. The cabin (Getaway House) is a thoughtfully designed, cozy space, with all the essentials for a relaxing weekend in the woods.

The small area surrounding the cabin is perfect. There's a picnic table, Muskoka chairs and a firepit with a grill grate. There's a container containing wood and a few startup logs located by the firepit and basic provisions inside the cabin for purchase.

I've camped at Getaway House in Shenandoah seven times and have stayed in cabins located all over the map. I've stayed in Philip, Hank, Juanita, Carroll, Thelma and Lionel. The Thelma is my absolute favorite. This is the first time I've stayed in this style of cabin and although we only require one bed, now I prefer the double bed cabin.

It feels like this cabin is larger than the one bed style and it's nice to have a space to keep your belongings out of the way - We put our stuff on the top bunk. If you've stayed at a Getaway House, you know space is limited and these tiny cabins can get crowded.

When you book your cabin (one or two beds), you can request a cabin style or a specific cabin. Although Getaway House doesn't promise you'll get a particular cabin, they will make a note in your booking and do their best to accommodate you.

The location of the Thelma cabin is perfect. It's on the outer edge of the outpost and has a larger area around the cabin. I highly recommend you take a look at the Getaway House map and try to snag a cabin in this area of the outpost.

While you should put your phone, tablet and computer away, I can't help myself. Here I am trying desperately to get service. The reception isn't great, so it does kinda force you to enjoy camping sans electronics.

I highly recommend packing board games. My favorites are Bears vs Babies, Exploding Kittens, Throw Throw Burrito and Oh Fruck!

Every camping trip is a little different. Sometimes we explore the outpost, other times we play games all day and I always change up the food and beverage menu. This trip was focused on relaxing, sitting by the fire and taking naps.

Of course, I had to snap a few camping inspired pics of the cabin, Teddy and I before messing it up. Here I'm wearing a Moschino Couture! Care Label-Print t-shirt and Pook socks. Pook is one of my favorite brands to shop camping-inspired clothing and accessories. My tote is the Gucci Florentia Lorto Di Giove tote.

My husband, Teddy and I camp at Getaway House at least once a month. It's good to get a change of scenery once in a while, do something different, put down your electronics (discipline required) and simply getaway from everyday life.

The FRESHFARM Market - Dupont Circle

October 01, 2019

I've just come from wandering the FRESHFARM Market in Dupont Circle and I LOVED IT! I'm a huge fan of markets and I was really looking forward to this one. I wasn't disappointed - this market is impressive. The people, beautiful products, vast variety of beverages and food, thoughtful stands and persons attending them, make this market a must-see.

I'm sure most locals frequent this market, but this should should be on every "what to see in DC" list. Prepare yourself for a crowd, yummy samples and an overall great experience. Grab your shopping tote, cause you're gonna need the space.

Named one of the top farmer's markets in the country (Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times of London), this market has a lot to offer. During peak season, there are over fifty farmers offering fruit, vegetables, baked goods, district-made beer and spirits, cheese, meat, poultry, eggs, jams and pickles.. It's a Sunday haven for locals to shop fresh and organic foodstuffs and beverages.

FRESHFARM Market is open from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm on Sunday and is overflowing with shoppers. I thought if we arrived around 9:30 there wouldn't be too many people (being that it's Sunday morning), but no, this place was super busy. There was a lineup of over 30 people waiting for bagels.   We didn't get to try the bagels, cause I had my dog with me, but I'm convinced they're delicious.

The produce is brilliant in color and super-fresh. As shoppers are purchasing produce, the stand attendees are replenishing stock and ensuring the stands are perfect. The owners and staff were really nice (most of them) and happy to answer any questions. There were also samples (love that).

We didn't buy any produce, cause we were going out of town, but I'm a big vegetable fan and will definitely frequent the FRESHFARM Market for my weekly grocery shopping.

My favorite stop was the King Mushrooms stand. I'm a huge fan of the fruiting body of fungus and had no idea there were so many different kinds.

The guy tending to the stand was pleasant and explained that mushrooms have many health benefits. I purchased a small bottle of Lion's Mane Double Extraction in an effort to give my failing memory a jolt - it's been a week and nothing yet, but these things take time.

The Chicken of the Woods mushroom is beautiful - like coral. I've never had this type of mushroom, but plan to visit the market this weekend and buy some.

The sun was shinning and I was able to capture good photos. I have more mushroom pics, but my blog is limited and there's so much more to talk about.. Oh and most of the people tending to the stands allowed me to take photos. It was a nice photography experience.

Right Proper sounds like something a Newfie would name their beer - I'm from Newfoundland and had to buy some. The display was huge and there was a nice selection of beer.

The guy assisting us seemed to be more concerned with waving to people at the other stands and wasn't overly helpful. I kinda feel bad that I'm harping on you, but you can do better. You potentially lost a loyal customer - This beer better be delicious and "Right Proper" to ensure a return to the Right Proper stand.

I'm not a baked goods fan at all. I love sandwiches, but the bread is just a means of transportation to my mouth. Albeit, the baked goods at the FRESHFARM Market were appealing, especially the sweet and savory pastries.

My dog would have been jealous if I ate something and didn't share with him and wheat isn't healthy for dogs, so I snapped a few pics and wandered to the next alluring stand.

The Gordy's Pickle Jar stand was a "must stop and buy something" moment. My husband loves anything pickled, but our hands were full (we already purchased beer and a bottle of whiskey), so we opted for just the Bloody Mary Mix. We will definitely be regulars at this stand.

The flowers at the FRESHFARM Market were unique - even I was impressed and I'm not a big fan of flowers. Albeit, I had to have a bunch. The flowers were displayed individually in buckets, so you can create your own bouquet. These flowers were the only pop of color in my neutral home and lasted a week. I've been converted to a flower fan.

I moved to this neighborhood mid-summer and was anticipating the Dupont Circle market, but was preoccupied with decor. I finally got up on a beautiful Sunday morning, grabbed my pink shopping tote and ventured out.

There's a lot to love about this neighborhood, but the FRESHFARM Market is my favorite attraction so far. I'm declaring myself a regular and looking forward to see what's offered during the festive holidays..

Charming Cosmetics

March 29, 2019

I'm addicted to cosmetics! Even though my Cosmocube is overflowing and my beauty studio stash (products awaiting photos and reviews) is abundant, I can't control the need to peruse the online Sephora store OFTEN. The Just Arrived section is the latest and greatest lineup at the cosmetic Mecca of the world.

With transparent bags trending this Spring/Summer, attractive products and accessories are a must. Here's a few fun items that will brighten up your summer.. Of course, everything is pink - I'm obsessed!

I'm a HUGE fan of the Sephora Collection. The cosmetics typically cost less then most brands, but maintain a high-quality standard. There's always new products in the just arrived section online and currently 500+ items to peruse.

This Sephora Collection Love You Beary Much Retractable Brush is super cute. It's the perfect gift for a budding amateur and their little girl makeup kit AND for an expert with a free-spirited, cute sense of style.

This charming bear has a a retractable swivel brush that allows you to control the amount of bristles used and thus create a number of brush styles. The rounded bristles are dense and super soft.

Just remove the bears head, push down on the plastic column and apply blush, bronzer and powder foundation. I suppose you could use this brush to apply liquid foundation, but it's gonna leave a mess inside the bears head.

This delightful design also includes two tiny brushes in the bears stomach - so cute! The small angled brush and spoolie are great for shaping and enhancing your eyebrows. This plastic bear case isn't gonna fit in my everyday cosmetic bag, but the two little brushes are the perfect mini-size.

The Love You Beary Much retractable brush is made from plastic and is lightweight. It's a little challenging to get the white door open the first few times, but the cute bear head removes easily and pops back on nicely. LOVE!

YES! This ionic technology blowdryer has a vanilla-scented infuser that exudes a sweet scent while you blow-dry your hair. It's BRILLIANT! The Sephora Collection Sweet Scents Perfume Infusing Blowdryer contains a removable "Sweet Bunny" infuser that looks like a cartoon bunny and smells delicious. LOVE!

The vanilla scent reminds me of Strawberry Shortcake (the doll). It's pleasant, BUT super-strong. I'm popping Advils while I type this review! If you are sensitive, you can remove the vanilla scent "Sweet Bunny", but that would kinda defeat the purpose?!

I hope this innovative tool is a success and Sephora Collection releases new "Sweet Bunny" scents. Coconut and chocolate are at the top of my list - HINT HINT..

The lightweight dryer is foldable and has an ultra-quiet 110V DC motor. The handle is ergonomically correct and comfortable to hold. AND, there is a multi-step switch for drying options. This gentle ionic dryer comes with a pouch and is great for travel.

The plastic design feels a little cheap, but what it lacks in quality, it makes up for cute, innovative design. This pink and white, vanilla infused hairdryer is PERFECT for a little girl or an immature big girl! Ladies and gents obsessed with pink and child-like products - don't be offended, keep doing you and enjoy your vanilla scented hair..

In addition to the velvet-like travel bag, there is also a cute scrunchie in the box. The black hair tie has pink polka dots and two structured bunny ears. Super cute! My Toy Poodle, Teddy, loves hair ties - this one will keep him busy for hours!

I was shopping for facial rollers (rose quartz, jade..) and came across this Kaja Roller Glow Roll-on Highlighting Balm. The fun, unique design includes a rectangular pot of pearlescent pink highlighter and two mini, hygienic paint rollers. It's super cute and an effective way to apply highlighter to your body.

The case is plastic and a pretty magenta shade. Enclosed is a mirror and and one roller applicator that snaps on to a plastic door that separates the sponge from the highlighting balm. There is also an extra mini paint roller in the box.

The kit is little pricy, but there is a lot going on inside the box and the design is super-fun! This product is the perfect gift for a little girl experimenting with makeup - Or anyone addicted to cosmetics, pink and has a light sense of humor.

The cream-to-powder highlighter consists of ultra-reflective pigments of pearlescent pink with a golden undertone. The roll-on result is subtle and perfect against pale or slightly sun-kissed skin. This little paint roller is great for applying an even layer of highlighter to your arms and décolletage.

The sample photo on sephora.com are misleading - the product is super-subtle and you'd have to apply a ridiculous amount to get the result in the photo.

The brush is small enough to roll along your cheekbones, but I prefer a tool that allows for more concise application. If you like the sparkle in this highlighter, I suggest using your finger to apply the duo-chrome product.

The Cosmic Laundry color is super-reflective - There is a lot of sparkle in this cream-to-powder balm. The product blends nicely. The Kaja Roller Glow isn't gonna replace my go-to highlighters, but the concept is cute and I had fun sharing my product review with you..

Fur Baby Fashion

March 04, 2019

My favorite and absolute BEST accessory is my little fur baby, Teddy the Bear. He's a Toy Poodle, looks like a fluffy bear and loves fashion. His closet is overflowing, and of course matches his mommy's fashion style. Teddy just turned two - here's a look back on his doggy fashion..

Teddy's first trip to New York City. My little guy survived two days of rain in his blue Fabdog packway raincoat. We spent most of the time in our hotel room watching Pets!

Yes, there was a time when Teddy was a doggy nudist! I never intended to be a dog mom that dresses her dog. I thought it was ridiculous! BUT, then the winter weather came and he was cold. So began the winter wardrobe..

Teddy loves wearing clothes. I can hold up options and he will choose his favorite. Hoodies are a must and we always match. Teddy is wearing an American Apparel dog hoodie and blue Puppia sports harness.

Surprisingly, Teddy is willing and happy to wear hats! This is my Fenty X Puma trapper's hat. He loves anything furry and fluffy (like mommy). Admittedly, it was hard to snap the perfect photo, while he was trying to eat the hat.

Baby bear in a Gucci tote! Teddy and I are loving the buffalo check trend. I have a bag, he has a vest and Daddy has a hat! We look ridiculous walking down the street in matching outfits! Animal lovers - don't be upset that he's in a tote! Teddy is a dog model and loved every moment of this photo shoot.

Enter the boots. I read that you should condition your dog to boots at an early age, so when Teddy was a baby, he often wore socks at home. When it came time to put boots on, he didn't make a fuss. Teddy makes wearing doggy boots look easy AND he has four pairs!

Of course, Teddy has too many winter vests. Green, blue, camo.. He's well equipped for the cold weather. Dog parents - please protect your dogs from the cold and salt. I see so many dogs with no coat and no protection on their paws (the parents are bundled up though).

T-shirts are a must! Teddy has a HUGE selection of t-shirts in many colors, with cute sayings. This green and camo t-shirt says BOSS (fitting). We've almost worn this one out.

Teddy's birthday t-shirt says BRUNCH BACON BOOZE. Of course he had bacon on his b-day, but NO BOOZE! Teddy had the best birthday a two year old bear can ask for. He wore his tuxedo bow tie and cuffs all day. The hat was bait of a struggle - it makes a crinkle sound and he loves playing with it.

That was my fashion tribute to Teddy the Bear. I didn't think I would become one of those dog parents, BUT I'm happy I did. My little bear never leaves the house without a careful curated outfit!

The Bomber Jacket

February 28, 2018

Bomber jackets seem to never go out of style, but this staple jacket had a major fashion moment in 2017. I noticed a surge in mens bombers last year - no surprise, men and bomber jackets go hand-in-hand. In the 50's, this military style (bomber style) jacket made it's way from, well, men in the military to the streets. Bombers made another comeback in the 90's. In 2018, the rebellious fashion attitude has the bomber momentum going strong again.

The bomber jacket is the perfect season transitioning outerwear. Light-weight jackets and layers are suitable for the in-between season. You can pair the bomber jacket with anything - really! Casual looks, day dresses AND even more elegant looks. The bomber adds a roughness and contrast to the 'all dressed-up and goin' somewhere special look'. This urban style jacket is relaxed and evokes a 'cool' vibe.

This Spring, relaxed fit and oversized bombers with graphic logos across the back are on-trend. Yeah, you can opt for the traditional military green, camo and navy fabrics, or you can add a little intrigue as you're walking away. 'You thought I looked good from the front - wait till I turn around'! Arm patches, appliqués and embellished zipper pull tags make this long-time staple jacket modern again.

This silk Valentino bomber jacket (available at Mytheresa) is everything (really, there's a lot going on here)! I love the pale pink stripe with yellow piping along the shoulders and sleeves. The contrast against the olive green satin is perfect. The black and white ribbed trims are traditional and chic. The color combination is genius. The beaded and embroidered butterfly appliqués on the front, back and sleeves are gorgeous. Truly amazing! This reinvented bomber jacket is my favorite this season.

The collegiate varsity inspired Miu Miu appliquéd satin-shell bomber jacket (available at NET-A-PORTER) is sporty and fun. The red and white bouclé 'M' patch and glass-beaded flamingo add a playful vibe to the muted shades navy and antique-rose. This relaxed fit bomber jacket has snap buttons and ribbed trims.

The eagle appliqué on the back of this Off-White satin varsity jacket (available at Mytheresa) is all biker jacket meets bomber jacket. The snap buttons and black and white ribbed trims give this jacket a sporty vibe, while the eagle and flower reference denotes femininity and freedom.

Another one of my favorites - the Off-White camouflage bomber jacket (available at Mytheresa). I LOVE camo and have seen this print up close - it's vibrant and the high-contrast white logo across the back elevates this design. The slouchy fit feels like you're wearing your guys clothes and the O-ring zipper and durable fabrication are the epitome of the bomber jacket.

From the Thomas Maier Spring 2018 collection - this duchess-satin bomber jacket (available at NET-A-PORTER) is anything but boring. The combination of the gray, camo sleeves, and pink and red striped trims is feminine and fun. The pink flamingo appliqué is cute and girlie. There seems to be many bird references this spring.

P.E Nation is a athletic clothing brand AND this red and blue striped bomber jacket (available at Mytheresa) will definitely elevate your work-out look. It's a bit 'loud', so I'd opt for an all black ensemble underneath. The toggle zip is branded with the P.E Nation logo and the red stripes around the sleeves are giving me a race-car clothing vibe.

Gillette Venus Swirl

January 29, 2015
This razor has a lot goin' on! The Gillette Venus Swirl is great for shaving those "hard to reach areas". The blade itself pivots, giving you more flexibility when you shave. The ball between the handle and razor swivels causing the razor to turn and allows you to smoothly glide over your skin and around your curves. The venus blade has five blades, a moisture ribbon all around the blade, a moistureglide serum strip and a tiny comb that pushes your hair towards the blades evenly. I'm liken' this razor! Gillette Venus razors are my favorite by far - they give you a great shave, no nicks and leave your skin feeling smooth. Last year Gillette released the Venus Snap razor; a travel size razor that came in a plastic travel case. I use my Snap razor every time I travel. It's small and leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth.

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy

January 19, 2015

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is a non-laser treatment that uses broad spectrum light programed at specific wavelengths to treat "angry" skin. IPL is used to improve photoaged skin, erase age spots, treat rosacea, reduce redness caused by broken capillaries, treat acne, remove unwanted hair and enhance your skins overall appearance, resulting in an even and radiant complexion.

I had my first IPL treatment ten days ago and am impressed with the results. The procedure was quick and the pain level, bearable. It felt like a hot light against my face and an elastic snapping on my skin (not pleasant). Thankfully my dermatologist treated my entire face in less than twenty minutes. There were minimal side effects: slight burning sensation and itchy skin (lasted one day). The brown spots on my face became dark and slowly faded over the following week. The age spots on my face are 30% of what they were prior to the treatment and my skin is luminous! I also have rosacea and since my treatment the redness on my cheeks, nose or forehead has dissipated. I will have a second treatment in seven weeks - Hopefully the IPL will remove the remaining pigmentation and my complexion will be "near perfect".

I highly recommend the IPL treatment for age spots. The cost is $300 to $600 per session. I know it seems like a lot, but think of the money you will save on foundation, cover-up and the plethora of skin enhancing facial creams and serums you use regularly! Great skin = less makeup and less product.

KOH Hand Nourisher & Nourishing Cuticle Brush

May 08, 2014

One of my favorite stores to visit in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) is KOH Cosmetics. One thing we are missing in America is a great nail product store like KOH.

KOH carries every nail product imaginable. Nail polishes in over 100 colors, anti-ageing nail products, hand creams and scrubs, nail nursing products, mani/pedi tools and even products for your guy.

Two of my favorite (must have) products form KOH are the Nourishing Cuticle Brush and Essential Hand Nourisher. The cuticle brush contains Jojoba, tea tree oil, sesame oil, shea butter, vitamin E and aloe vera. It leaves your cuticles soft and clean. If it's been too long since you've had a manicure and your cuticles are dry, apply this nourishing cuticle oil and you would never know that you desperately need a mani. The nourishing hand cream smells pretty, is light and non-greasy. I use it many times a day (people often ask to use my hand cream). These two products together leave my hands soft and rejuvenated.

Each product comes in its own KOH case with a snap closure; great for travel. The Nourishing Cuticle Brush sells for €20,30 and the Essential Hand Nourisher for €19,85. If you are ever in Amsterdam and in need of a quick mani or just wanna pick up some great nail products, visit KOH Cosmetics at the Bijenkorf, Located in the Dam Square.
