My Must-Haves - Pandemic 2020

May 04, 2020

My usual Must-Haves list is comprised of designer clothing and accessories that I have-to-have or am lusting over and can't afford. These days, the must-have items on my list are necessary beauty products during a pandemic. Never thought I'd say that!

I'm sensitive to scents and hate the smell of hand sanitizer, but it's a necessary product to have on hand! I was so happy when NCLA Beauty launched a small lineup of Hands Clean sanitizer available in lavender, eucalyptus, watermelon and unscented. You can pre-order these little bottles of hand sanitizer at Revolve.

I got lip fillers (and botox) a few days before the stay-at-home order came into effect AND my lips are perfect - BUT, now I have to wear a face mask. Enough said! I'm happy to see many of my favorite clothing brands producing face masks - I know the quality is there. I pre-ordered three cute GRLFRND masks at Revolve

The best place to order cheeky, cloth face masks is Etsy. You can also order personalized masks. If you want a hefty mask with replaceable filters, there are many online stores to choose from. I believe face masks will be around for a while and everyone should have at least one.

It seems like many people are struggling with DIY beauty these days. Most rely on hair, nail and tanning salons to keep their beauty in check. Fortunately, I prefer to do my own gel nails and apply self tanner at home. I do however get my hair colored every three weeks and had to learn a new skill during these unusual times.

dpHUE is my go-to hair coloring brand. The dpHUE root touch-up kit is easy to use, the color is perfect and the solution completely covers roots (even greys). Paired with the dpHUE gloss, this color touch-up duo is perfect for someone who requires single process coloring. I posted a lengthy DIY root touch-up video a few weeks ago - Scroll down a little..

Another necessary step in most beauty routines is waxing or threading the upper lip and eyebrows. The Tweezerman Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover is an excellent DIY threading tool. You simply twist the handles, while gliding the coil spring along your upper-lip. It's painful, but does a great job removing unwanted hair. You can purchase this Tweezerman beauty tool at Sephora.

Being able to do your own nails is a necessary skill to have. You never know when your go-to salons (and the entire world) may close for months!

I was introduced to gel nails a few years ago and went to the salon four times before deciding to do it myself. I purchased gel polish in a variety of nude shades, base and top coat polish, remover, foils and an LED nail lamp. My go-to brand is CND.

I recently discovered Static Nails. The lineup includes reusable press-on nails (I gotta try these) and long-wear polish that promises to last up to 10 days. The shades are gorgeous and it seems like either one would be easier than applying/removing gel polish. Of course, I have a few items in my cart!

Admittedly, I like tanning beds. BUT, the last place I wanna be is baking inside a horizontal UV radiation bed that someone else just laid in. SO, I'm going back to DIY self-tanning. My go-to brand is St. Tropez. I've been using it for years. BUT, as of late, I'm experimenting with new brands. I'm going to apply Luna Bronze Self Tanning Lotion later today..

This process takes a little practice. I suggest purchasing a light color, a tanning mitt and body exfoliator. Read the instructions carefully and stay away from water and excessive activities that will make you sweat for at least 6 hours.

Applying self-tanner is a quick way to enhance your stay-at-home skin. On the bright side, if you screw it up, nobody will see it - Unless you post pics.

DIY Root Touch-Up

April 01, 2020

Due to stay-at-home regulations and temporary business closures, my hair salon is closed. AHH.. I gotta cover these grays! SO, I'm using the dpHUE Root Touch-Up Kit (black) and am coloring my hair for the first time.

I was nervous, BUT the process was easy - I'm beyond happy with the results. I LOVE this DIY hair color kit and highly recommend dpHue.

Hmm.. How many people are gonna adopt DIY hair coloring and abandon their monthly salon visit? At home coloring is a fraction of the price AND you don't even have to change out of your pj's.

The Best of 2018

December 06, 2018

I'm a huge BEAUTYBLENDER fan. I've purchased all but one product in the lineup and have yet to be disappointed. The beautyblender cosmetic sponge is available in two sizes - original and micro.mini. The smaller beautyblender is one-quarter the size of the original and perfect for blending makeup in small areas. The beautyblender is also available in a variety of colors - green, black, blue, nude, white, gray and shades of pink.

The lineup also includes innovative tools and cleansers. Liquid Blendercleanser, Blendercleanser Solid and Instaclean Sponge and Brush Cleansing Spray all do a great job cleaning your cosmetic sponge. I use the solid while traveling - it comes in a plastic case and has a custom grid for drying. The liquid is my favorite. A little goes a long way and the scent is refreshing. The Instaclean Sponge and Brush Cleansing Spray is for quick removal of surface stains, so you get true-to-color application. It's like dry shampoo for your beautyblender.

BEAUTYBLENDER also has Bounce Liquid Whip Long Wear Foundation (haven't tried this one yet), Blender Defender Beautyblender Protective Case (LOVE this - great for travel), Liner.Designer Pro (for perfect eye liner application) and the Power Pocket Puff (a double-sided puff used for powder formulas). I'm awarding BEAUTYBLENDER Outstanding Makeup Tools of 2018.

The Best Eye-Care Award goes to Lumify Redness Relief Eye Drops. These eye drops selectively target redness for whiter, brighter eyes. The unique formulation targets redness, while still allowing oxygen and nutrition to the eye, eliminating the risk of re-bound redness.

This stuff is AMAZING! It starts working within one minute and last for hours. Bausch + Lomb claims it lasts up to 8 hours. It doesn't last that long for me, but I'm sure each person is unique. Albeit, the bottle is small, so you can take it everywhere and apply the drops on an as needed basis. The downside to the small bottle is that it doesn’t last long. Here's where my product hoarding, cosmetic junkie quirk benefits me - after the first application and miraculous transformation, I purchased five bottles (just in case it sells out).

Another amazing anti- redness solution - It Cosmetics Bye Bye Redness Correcting cream. I have 'officially' (nothing I declare is really official) branded this product the 'anti-redness warpaint'. If you have Rosacea or hyper pigmentation, this stuff is going to change your life.

Bye Bye Redness by IT Cosmetics deserves the Bye Bye Redness Award. It's kind of a foundation, primer and cream in one. Bye Bye Redness is thick, has a silky texture and gives you super full-coverage. This product is smooth, goes on like a primer (similar to Colorscience primers), and has a tinge of green (to combat redness). Apply to your cheeks, nose and forehead, and blend outwards. AND little goes a long way.

I know I've exhausted the Sol de Janeiro lineup and posted too many reviews, BUT I'm addicted and had to award the BUM BUM Body Cream and Brazilian Kiss Cupuacu Lip Butter Best Nourishing Products of 2018.

The pistachio-caramel scent of Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is delicious! The scent is strong, but sweet and intriguing. The cream is super-nourishing and has a slight shimmer that gives your skin a subtle glow.

Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Kiss Cupuacu Lip Butter is one of my favorite lip balms - I have one in my bathroom, one at my computer and one in my handbag! The light, creamy texture is nourishing and the tube is BIG, so it will last a long time. This super-hydrating lip balm is a must have.

I'm a Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil super-fan and have tried a ridiculous number of other shampoos and conditioners, but always go back to Bb. Not this time - Olaplex No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner have landed a permanent spot in my haircare routine.

The No.4 Bond Maintenance Shampoo and No.5 Bond Maintenance Conditioner have a subtle, delicious coconut citrus scent. The combination of these two haircare products will leave your hair feeling soft and super-nourished. Olaplex, please accept my Superior Haircare Award.

This twist-up, crayon-like Bb. color stick is the perfect root touch-up product and worthy of the Quick Fix Award. I hate when my roots show, and admittedly, I have three grays (that I can see)! I dye my hair every three weeks, so my roots are maintained. I do however have very fine hair, and this color stick is great for filling in sparse areas. Just glide the twist-up pencil along your hair for perfect coverage.

The Beauty From Within Award goes to SkinnyMint Tea. The two-step detox program is comprised of 28 day teas and 14 night teas (for every second night). The creators of SkinnyMint Tea have carefully curated all-natural ingredients that compliment each other. The 'food synergy' is potent.

The Morning Boost contains green tea (the list of green tea benefits goes on and on..), Yurba Mate to curb your appetite and boost your metabolism, Nettle Leaves are a natural diuretic, Dandelion for digestions and Guarana fruit for cleaning. The fruity flavor is light and delicious. I'm addicted!

The Night Cleanse Tea has anti-bloating Ginger Root, Orange Leaves to aid with sleep, Senna Leaves are a natural laxative, Peppermint for digestive and colic relief, Licorice Root as an antacid, Hawthorn Berries for anti-anxiety and the natural laxative Psyllium Husk. Each of these all-natural ingredients have additional benefits. This ingredient combination is super-cleansing.

Bb Color Gloss

January 28, 2018

High shine is a must if you have natural black or color treated hair. Lacklustre black strands are dull and uninspiring. After my botched hair dye job in 2016, my hair was damaged beyond repair. Any treatments I applied just ensured that there was no further damage, but there was nothing that would bring my hair back to the healthy, shiny black bob it was before my attempt to go blonde. I'm certain my hair is healthier a year and half later, cause it's simply grown out. Now I can focus on maintaining a healthy mane and super shinny strands..

When Bumble and Bumble (my favorite hair product line) launched a line of Bb. Color Gloss in warm blonde, cool blonde, brunette, universal red and clear - I immediately had to have this enhancing hair gloss. I do like some Bumble and Bumble products better than others, but this luxury hair brand rarely disappoints. I purchased the Bb. Color Gloss in clear and had HUGE expectations.

You apply the product to dry hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse, and go about your normal hair care routine. The scent is strange to say the least, but it is a color treatment (to all you people hating on the smell). The solution appears to have sparkles in it? Yeah, I had little sparkles on my face, along the hairline. Of course, you're gonna rinse and wash your hair, so the sparkles are useless. The process was easy, but the results lacked lustre. My hair was shiny, but it's always shiny AND I was expecting something miraculous to happen. I was hoping the sun would reflect off my hair and cause people to look away! I'm a little disappointed.

My hair did however feel incredibly soft and clean. As many of you know, super clean hair is not ideal - it's too soft, hard to style and typically lays flat. I didn't do anything else different that day, so I'm going to assume that the Bb. Color Gloss was the culprit.

I should point out that I applied the clear luminous hair gloss to already shiny black hair, so maybe my opinion should be taken with a grain a salt. I would imagine that if you have red hair, this stuff may be life changing. Blonde, red, pink, silver - these are all vibrant shades that require attention. An instant lustre pick-me-up between salons visits may keep your strands looking brilliant.

Another great hair product to keep your strands looking fresh and vibrant is the Bumble and Bumble Bb. Color Stick. This twist-up, crayon-like color stick is the perfect root touch-up product. The formula is water resistant - don't worry about color running down your face, neck and clothes if you get caught in the rain. The stick is compact and takes a little while to cover your roots (or grays), but is great for travel and on-the-go touch ups.

The Bumble and Bumble Bb. Color Stick is available in five natural shades - blonde, dark blonde, brown, red and black. There are four limited edition statement hues - Ballet (pale pink), Lilac (purple-ish-blue), Flamingo (fuchsia), and Pacific (a vibrant blue). The highly-pigmented color sticks are a great temporary solution to roots and grays or just enhancing your color with vibrant streaks. I also have an uneven hairline, and use the Bb. Color Stick to fill-in my fine hair for a full look.

Twist-Up & Cover-up

August 15, 2017

This twist-up, crayon-like Bb. color stick is the perfect root touch-up product. I have light-brown hair, BUT color my strands black. I'm not one for colorful streaks in my hair and it would be a challenge on black stands, but I can see how they'd enhance blonde hair.

This highly-pigmented color stick is a great temporary solution to roots and grays. Bumble and Bumble is my absolute favorite hair care brand - it's pricey, but worth it. You can purchase the Bb. Color Stick at Sephora.
