A Faux-Glow

August 07, 2017

Yeah, I have thirteen makeup highlighters - I realize it's a little unnecessary! The first highlighting makeup I purchased was Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm, and the rest.. well.. I'm a product junkie!

Highlighting, low-lighting and contouring are a must these days. AND there are hundreds of highlighting products to choose from. Before I get in to the specifics, they're all similar. Yeah, the only major difference is whether the product is a solid (creamy-stick), dewy-balm-like stick, powder or liquid. Maybe some have anti-aging qualities or contain SPF, but aside from texture, color and sheen, they're closely related. Here's what I have to say about some of the more popular highlighting products..

Want a slight glow - Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm is subtle and effective. Application is smooth and the barely-there sheen is flattering. Another BB liquid highlighter is Bobbi Brown Face Highlighter. This light liquid will give you super-shiny highlight. It has a strong gold-tone, and there's a whole lot of sparkle in this product. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer - Radiance has a gold-tone and lots of micro sparkles. This light liquid is a bit much for my facial skin, but looks great on legs and shoulders - mix with your body moisturizer and blend well. Primers are great for subtle brightening.

BECCA Backlight Filter Face Primer is unique in that it blurs imperfections, while giving your skin a radiant glow. The super-lightweight liquid absorbs nicely. There is a subtle glow, but barely-there sheen. Be warned, this product has a strong scent (for those who are sensitive). Like the Bobbi Brown Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm and Laura Mercier Foundation Primer - Radiance, this product is for priming your skin. The effect is subtle, but makes a difference.

Want a dewy look? Ciaté Dewy Stick has a balm-like texture that glides on oh so smoothly giving your skin a low-shimmer, dewy glow. This The super-light balm is creamy (not tacky). This multipurpose product nourishes your skin, illuminates and leaves a wet-dewy-like sheen. LOVE! Glossier Haloscope is similar, but has more shimmer. The dual-delivery formula combines makeup and skincare. The inner solid oil core contains vitamin-rich minerals, while the outer circle contains genuine crystal extracts. This two-in-one product is lightweight and high-shimmer. Both these dew-infusing products are great for those no makeup days.

My go-to highlighters are MILK Makeup Highlighter (perfect for body), Benefit Watt's Up! Cream-to-powder Highlighter (favorite), and tréStiQue Mini Highlight & Perfect Multipurpose Stick. MILK Makeup Highlighter is the size of a round deodorant. The larger surface allows for great body application. The product melts with your body heat and blends nicely. I use it on my legs and arms. The Watt's Up! Cream-to-powder Highlighter is the perfect shade (on pale or sun-kissed skin), and the little sponge applicator is handy when you're on the road. I use a damp Beauty Blender (with water and Farsáli Rose Gold Elixir) to blend the Watt's Up! highlighter. The tréStiQue Highlight & Perfect Multipurpose Stick is a similar shade and texture to the Watt's Up! The cream-gel product glides on smoothly, and the luminescent shade is perfect on sun-kissed skin.

Powder highlighter is still my go-to finishing touch. I LOVE Bobbi Brown Highlighting Powder in Pink Glow. The cool-pink highlights are nice on pale skin, and the effect is subtle (apply lightly). I use a fan brush to lightly sweep the product across my cheek bones. For more intense shimmer, I use a dense brush and sweep the powder down the bridge of my nose and across my cupids bow. This product is for specific highlighting (not an all-over glow). This powder highlighter is perfect for a little extra light-reflective glow.

I consider highlighting a necessity. Even when your skin looks drab and downright yucky - highlighting will do wonders for your complexion. Apply an all-over illuminator to, well.. allover. Apply makeup highlighter to your cheek bones, down the bridge of your nose (don't go all the way to the tip) and across your cupids bow. Fake a fresh glow and highlight.

Online Exclusive

April 15, 2016

Y'all know I love miniature versions of my favorite products and will go to great lengths to get them! Bobbi Brown has 'online exclusive' trios including one of three beauty-boosting face masks, along with two mini (deluxe sample size) products to compliment the face mask. For an extra $13 you get two mini products - I'm all in! If you're gonna buy the masks anyway, purchase them online and get the trio. It's a great way to try other Bobbi Brown products without paying full-price. I'm a huge Bobbi Brown fan and would love to buy every product (that suits my needs), but it's expensive stuff. bobbibrowncosmetics.com often has exclusive sets and a gift with purchase - more mini's! Of course you gotta into the store for makeup, color choices and custom advise, but once you've determined your product line, shop bobbibrowncosmetics.com.

I posted about these masks a few months ago, but let me recap; I'm branding these masks - The Miraculous Makeover Mask Trio. Instant Detox, Radiance Boost and Skin Nourish can be used together or individually to address your specific needs. I'm obsessed!

The Instant Detox is my favorite. This clay-based mask is creamy, has a refreshing citrus scent and kinda cools your skin while you detox. This mask will leave you feeling refreshed and super clean. The Instant Detox deep cleanse removes excess oil, tightens my skin and my complexion looks AMAZING! I use the Instant Detox and the Radiance Boost twice a week - This deep cleanse/radiance boosting treatment is my favorite facial pick-me-up. The online exclusive Beauty Sleep Trio includes: Instant Detox Mask (75ml), Extra Repair Moisture Balm (7ml), and Extra Repair Eye Cream (3ml).

The superfine Walnut Grain Beads in Radiance Boost, gently exfoliate your skin and improve circulation. This mask leaves my skin feeling super-tight (I like that), and my complexion is brighter. The orange scent is invigorating - I'm partial to citrus scents in facial care cosmetics. The online exclusive Radiant Glow Trio includes: Radiance Boost Mask (75ml), Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm (5ml), and Hydrating Face Tonic (15ml).

I also use the Skin Nourish once a week before bed. This lightweight mask is creamy, the scent is calming, and I love a mask that you can leave-on throughout the night. In the morning you will have plump smooth, nourished skin. The online exclusive Thirsty Skin Trio includes: Skin Nourish Mask (75ml), Extra Treatment Lotion (15ml), and Extra Face Oil (3ml).

Beauty-Boosting Face Masks

February 19, 2016

I'd been anticipating the January launch of Bobbi Brown Beauty-Boosting Face Masks, and despite my many trips to the BB counter in Amsterdam was left empty-handed and wondering, what's all the hype? I practically had butterflies when I saw them on display in Harrods a few weeks ago. Yes, I'm that ridiculous! Lets 'face' it, every product Bobbi Brown releases is great - you can't go wrong with this premiere cosmetic line. It's no surprise that I purchased all three masks. I would have purchased the mini's too, but they didn't have them (insert sad face).

I'm branding these masks - The Miraculous Makeover Mask Trio. Instant Detox, Radiance Boost and Skin Nourish can be used together or individually to address your specific needs. I have overdosed on all three and love the results.

The Instant Detox is my favorite. This clay-based mask is creamy, has a refreshing citrus scent and kinda cools your skin while you detox. Hawaiian Sea Salt Water and Amazonian White Clay work together to remove impurities, reduce pore size and maintain moisture. This mask will leave you feeling refreshed and super clean. The Instant Detox deep cleanse removes excess oil, tightens my skin and my complexion looks AMAZING! I use the Instant Detox in the center of my forehead, down my nose, on my cheeks and chin. At the same time, I apply the Skin Nourish around my eye area (not too close to the eye), around the edges of my nose (where it gets super dry and flaky), and around my eyebrows (they're dry from Browfood - a hair growth treatment). Combined, these masks address both my skin issues at once. This deep cleanse/nourishing treatment is my favorite facial pick-me-up.

I also use the Skin Nourish twice a week before bed. This super-moisturizing mask contains hydrating herbs Coral Grass, Salicornia, and Trehalose, Collagen producing Chlorella Extract, and Muru Muru Butter to repair your skin's natural moisture barrier. This lightweight mask is creamy, the scent is calming, and I love a mask that you can leave-on throughout the night. Apply liberally and wait two-five minutes. Then gently remove the excess product and massage the remaining onto your skin. In the morning you will have plump smooth, nourished skin.

The superfine Walnut Grain Beads in Radiance Boost, gently exfoliate your skin and improve circulation. While the Kaolin Clay reduces oil, Algae Extract and Sodium Hyaluronate moisturize your skin, and Orange Oil energizes. I have Rosacea, and very sensitive skin, so I'm not surprised that this gentle exfoliator causes my forehead, nose and cheeks to turn red. Once the redness diminishes, my skin feels super-tight (I like that), and my complexion is brighter. The orange scent is invigorating - I'm partial to citrus scents in facial care cosmetics.

Directions: Instant Detox can be used once a week (or two if necessary). Apply, allow two-five minutes to pass and remove with warm water. Skin Nourish can be used three times a week. Apply, wait two-five minutes, gently remove access and leave the remaining product for overnight nourishing. Radiance Boost can be used once a week (or two if necessary). Apply, let it sit for two-five minutes and rinse off with warm water while gently massaging in circular motions.

The application of these masks is quick, but the results last. I should mention that the packaging is great. The metal-like tubes are flexible and you can roll them up, allowing you to get as much product out as possible.

Bobbi Brown Face

June 25, 2014

I have combination skin; rosacea, acne and oily. I struggled to find makeup to meet my long list of needs. My dermatologist recommended I try Bobbi Brown makeup. It's been a few years since my first purchase, and now I practically own every product made by Bobbi Brown. The makeup gives me the results I want and doesn't irritate my skin or clog my pores. The BB cream and yellow based Sheer Finish Loose Powder cover the redness on my cheeks and the Tinted Eye Brightener along with the white Retouching Powder masks dark circles under my eyes. Together these four products allow me to create a natural base, before adding blush, eye makeup and lip color.

I start with under eye cream and add a small amount of Tinted Eye Brightener. I gently sweep the Eye Brightener at the base of my under eye circles and blend upwards. Too much under eye makeup will sit in your wrinkles and cake in the corners of your eyes, so use sparingly.

Then I apply my favorite makeup product Bobbi Brown BB Cream. I squeeze the cream onto the back of my hand and using a foundation brush apply the cream to my face using circular motions to blend it in. I start on my forehead, blend down the bridge of my nose, apply to my cheeks and blend down around my chin and neck.

Finally I sweep the Retouching Powder under my eyes and across the bridge of my noise to brighten my look. Bobbi Brown Retouching Powder is amazing. It is available in six shades; each one combats specific discoloration of your skin. These powders even out your skin tone and brighten your look.

If I need extra coverage I will apply a small amount of Sheer Loose Powder. I strive for a natural look and most days forego the loose powder.

Visit a Bobbi Brown makeup counter at any major department store for a consultation; the knowledgable makeup artists will help you find your perfect makeup shades and teach you how to apply your makeup.
